Pork Council Urging To Finish CETA Legislation

The Canadian Pork Council is part of a group urging the federal government to implement Bill C-30, the bill that would put into motion CETA.

That's the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union.

Canadian Pork Council Chair Rick Bergmann says the country is a globally competitive producer and exporter of pork and pork products.

CPC officials say CETA will secure tariff-free access for processed pork products and 80,000 tonnes of pork cuts after a five year phase in period.

Meanwhile, the status of Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, is also on CPC’s radar.

The group emphasizes taht maintaining existing pork markets and opening up new markets is critical to the Canadian hog industry because 70 per cent of the industry’s output is now exported to almost 100 countries.
