Canadian Pork in 2016: Higher Volumes and Heavier Weights

Canada's hog slaughter continues to push well ahead of last year's pace and heavier weights are piling up overall production numbers.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada report the number of hogs processed at 18.1 million this year.

That's a gain of 2 per cent on 2015.

However, overall pork production is 2.8 per cent up on last year.

AAFC notes south of the border slaughter is up 1.7 per cent, but lighter shipping weights there have limited total production to an increase of only 1.1 per cent.

Hog slaughter in Ontario is up by 3.6 per cent so far this year.

Canadian feeder pig exports to the U.S. are up nearly 8 per cent from 2015.

Going the other way, pork imports from the States have dropped by more than 3 and half per cent.
