All Cattle Prices Up Last Week

Ontario's cattle market finally got a full slate of increased prices last week.

Beef farmers of Ontario report an increase of 147 fed steers and heifers sold on the week.

Prices, however, were up for both.

Heifers averaged $124.15, up $2.18 from the week prior.

Steer prices increased by $2.48, to an average of $126.90.

BFO notes 2,717 cull cows sold though auction markets, which is up 204 from the week before but still 71 less than the same week in 2015.

Prices for the week averaged $68.64, which is an up-tick of 78 cents from seven days earlier.

Ontario railgrade prices were up by 25 cents on the week. The farmers note that's still $52.50 below last year's price.

Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef report says distributors were active at the end of the week but it'll take another week or two before they get serious about making plans about buying for 2017.

He also points out Canadian beef features in flyers this week are somewhat poor.
