Ontario Canola Does Well Despite Dry Summer

OMAFRA is reporting good canola yields for much of the province this year.

The field crop team says quality was good overall as well, which was somewhat surprising in such a dry and hot summer.

Average yields in Bruce, Grey, and Wellington counties were about 10 per cent lower than last year.

The provincial average was down by 9 per cent.

The team notes early-planted canola got off to a great start but then was somewhat stressed as the dry weather and hot nights took over for much of July and August.

Surveyed farmers, however, felt the stress did not play significantly into results at the end of the season.

The ministry also points the out acres of canola grown in the province was up from 25,000 acres in 2015 to 30,000 acres this year.
