The Organic Council of Ontario is upset about a loophole in labelling that can lead to the misuse of the term "organic" here in Ontario.
The group points out OMAFRA allows products produced and sold within the province to avoid regulation unless they are stamped with the new federal organic logo.
The wording indicates the Canadian Food Inspection Agency doesn't enforce the term "organic" in products that don't leave the province.
OCO Chair Tom Manley says the matter could become a jurisdictional hot potato.
He adds the issue has gone back-and-forth between the CFIA and the province, yet nothing has been done to address it.
The group feels vendors and suppliers can use the opportunity to mislead consumers, which undermines the efforts of those businesses trying to do the right thing.
