The Species at Risk Partnerships on Agricultural Lands initiative is hoping farmers will help out southern Ontario's badger population.
BadgerWay, a new program developed by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association, is funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada with the aim of creating suitable habitats and corridors for the 200 remaining badgers in the province.
OSCIA President Gord Green says farmers are critical for the at-risk carnivore.
He adds enriching farm properties with windbreaks, buffer strips and grassy areas is key to the success of the program.
The association notes the program includes 80 per cent cost-share support to implement enrichment projects.
An additional 25 to 50 dollars an acre can be added through long-term support plans, up to $20,000 per farm business.
Projects must have started after April 1st of this year. The program will remain open to applicants until February 15th.
