The Beef farmers of Ontario report the number of cull cows hitting the market continues to be larger than usual for this time of year.
2,843 head sold last week, which is up 228 from the week before and 222 more than the same week in 2015.
Prices however were up 59 cents from the previous week.
The average of $69.26 is still $19.90 cents less than last year's price.
BFO also notes receipts of fed steers and heifers were up a little on the week and the year.
Fed steers averaged $123.79, up 32 cents from last week.
Fed heifers were up by an average of $1.49 at $124.33.
Both prices are right around 40 dollars less than they were a year ago.
Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef report feels beef features in retail flyers will be aggressive and plentiful this month.
He says the turn in cattle futures over the past week indicated the bottom had been hit, which led to retailers buying hard.
