Maple Leaf Increases Third Quarter Sales

Maple Leaf Foods has released it's earning results for the third quarter of 2016.

The processor says its net earnings increased by 70 per cent from last year's third quarter.

Sales increased by 4.1 per cent to $848.1 million.

Maple Leaf notes sales in fresh pork were up as it focused on value-added pork business which increased sale volumes.

It's jump in fresh poultry sales was credited to an improved sales mix.

President and CEO Michael McCain says the results demonstrate the company's expected performance after many years of strategic transformation.

He adds he's focused now on the next horizon, driving innovation and growth for a sustainable future while they reduce costs and expand the business.

Maple Leaf's Agribusiness Group saw adjusted operating earnings decrease to an eventual loss of $4.4 million, down from a profit of $1.6 million in 2015.

The company says the loss is a reflection of the impact of poor hog prices.
