The U.S. has had a record week of hog slaughter.
After hogs were held back along the east coast due to Hurricane Matthew, the week's slaughter hit 2.51 million head -- the most in a single week ever.
Ron Plain of the University of Missouri points out the record numbers are not just up 9.1 per cent on the week, they're nearly 8 and a half per cent higher than the same time last year.
Plain feels this week will be huge as well.
He also reports the average lean hog price for the month of September was down $4.76 from August, and down $8.28 from September 2015.
The national negotiated barrow and gilt price also dipped another 86 cents on the week to an average of $44.58.
Hog prices in Canada have declined by more than 20 points in all provinces from what they were a year ago.
Ontario has seen the least change, down 21.3 per cent.
The nation's overall pork production is now 1.9 per cent ahead of last year's pace.
