U.S. Corn and Soybean Harvest Catching Up To Usual Pace

Corn harvest is in full catch-up mode south of the border.

A wet September delayed much of the midwest while last week's passing of Hurricane Matthew held up the east coast.

The USDA says 46 per cent of this year's corn crop is now off. While 8 per cent behind last year's pace, the department points out that's just 3 points back of the five-year average.

This week's crop progress report rates remaining corn at 74 per cent good to excellent. That's up 1 per cent from last week -- 6 per cent better than last year.

The department continues to rate soybeans at 74 per cent good to excellent as bumper crops continue to be reported. The rating is a full 10 per cent better than this time in 2015.

62 per cent of American soys are now off, which is 11 per cent back of last year but a single point back of the five-year average.

The USDA also reports 72 per cent of winter wheat to be in the ground, slightly behind the norm.

Warm weather has emerged 47 per cent of that, which is a little above average. This week's heat will likely push that number even further ahead of usual.
