Scrapie Eradication Strategy Gets Federal Funding

The federal government has invested in the health of Canada's small ruminant farms.

Nearly $350,000 has been given to the Canadian Sheep Federation for the implementation of the Scrapie Eradication Strategy with the aim of eliminating the disease from both the sheep and goat industries.

The announcement was made by PEI Member of Parliament Wayne Easter on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture yesterday.

The funding comes from the Growing Forward 2's AgriMarketing Program.

Phil Kolodychuk, Chairman of the Canadian Sheep Federation applauses the investment, saying the program will bring both industries together while regaining lost markets and creating new opportunities for future trade.

The program will expand on the current Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program.
