Beef Prices Moving in Multiple Directions

Beef Farmers of Ontario are reporting the cull cow market to be under pressure again last week.

The 2,121 head sold through auction were 226 more than the week prior.

Cull cows averaged $72.98 which was down $3.30 on the week and $18.56 lower than last year.

BFO also says Ontario railgrade prices were all over the map.

They note prices took a large drop Monday before coming back up a day later, ending the week at an average of $7.75 below the week before -- down more than 47 dollars from this time last year.

Auction markets traded with solid demand last week, with prices ranging from steady to three dollars higher on the week.

Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef report says beef velocity is picking up at retail.

He adds there's a good mix of beef featured in flyers for the week with what he feels are good price points for sales.
