Drones Saving Money For Farmers

A Precision Ag. Specialist with the Hensall District Co-op says a partnership with Deveron UAS is helping farmers save time and money when applying fungicide.

Steve Redmond explains Deveron is providing drones to create a variable application map of a field.

Redmond points out pests are most likely to be an issue where the vegetation is the healthiest and satellite imagery can provide an overview of the field but drones provide a higher-resolution image that allows him to sit down with the farmer and create the variable application map.

Redmond says that allows the farmer to spray where the fungicide is needed and turn the spray off where it's not needed as opposed to just spraying the entire field.

Redmond adds the use of drones to map a field is still very new in Ontario but because edible beans are susceptible to white mould and the drones are very effective in controlling white mould, he believes it will be a very popular tool for anyone growing beans.
