Dairy's Economic Impact Growing

An ongoing study by EcoResources has given an update of the dairy industry's economic impact on Canada.

The study which began seven years ago, found dairy's contribution to the nation's Gross Domestic Product to have increased from 15.2 billion dollars in 2009 to 19.9 billion in 2015.

Research also found the industry contributed 3.8 billion dollars in local, provincial, and federal taxes.

Dairy Farmers of Canada President Wally Smith says farmers take great pride in their economic contributions.

He feels by increasing milk production, the diversity of dairy products and job numbers, local economies have been boosted - which he adds benefits all Canadians.

EcoResources notes the dairy sector sustained more than 220,000 full-time jobs last year, 3 per cent more than in 2009.

Canada's overall milk production has also jumped 6.7 per cent over that time.

DFC also points out that dairy is one of the top two agricultural sectors in 7 out of 10 provinces.
