Huron-Bruce MPP And Neonic Bill

A private member's bill dealing with neonic regulations is up for debate today at Queen's Park.

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson is bringing it forward.

The main point of Bill 4, the Supporting Agricultural Experts in their Field Act, sets out a definition of a professional pest advisor that will eliminate any restrictions placed on employment opportunities for professional pest advisors in the regulations.

Thompson says regulations that are due to start in August 2017 excessively confines the definition of a professional pest advisor.

"We all know when it's time to get out on the land, time is of the essence and farmers have a very specific window to get out there and determine what it is they need in terms of the type of seed they need to follow up with for their next year's planting," says Thompson. "By limiting the number of professional pest advisors down to 80, they're handcuffing farmers across the province."

According to Thompson, there are 538 Certified Crop Advisors and 30 Professional Agrologists province wide.
