Farm Product Price Index Down At Mid-Year Mark

Statistics Canada has released its latest farm index numbers.

The Farm Product Price Index on July 1st was down .3 per cent from last year.

StatsCan reports a nearly 8 per cent decrease in the livestock and animal products index from 2015 to 2016.

That continues a trend of year-to-year decline for every month since last October.

The agency says this year's dip was driven by 22 per cent lower prices in cattle and calves.

Dairy products were down just a tenth of a point while poultry was 2.3 per cent lower.

The report notes the July 1st index could have been lower, if not for a 5.6 per cent boost in hog prices.

The rising June index for hogs was the fifth month in as many months as stong demand supported prices.

StatsCan notes the Farm Product Price Index has dropped year-over-year for five straight months.
