Ontario Hog Slaughter, Prices Both Up So Far This Year

The province's hog prices were up at the end of July while prices for the rest of the country were down.

Ontario showed a price increase of 4 point 2 per cent, the lone province to see an uptick, while eight others reported a decrease.

The number of Ontario hogs slaughtered through July this year was up 1 per cent from where it was in 2015.

Canada's number of feeder pigs exported the the U.S. last week was down about a per cent and half from a year ago.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada statistics still show the number of feeder pigs sent across the border to be up nearly 10 per cent.

AAFC also reports a 7 per cent drop in Barrows, Gilts, and sows headed the same way.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri suggests that this year's fourth quarter slaughter in the U.S. is expected to beat last year's record numbers by about 2 per cent.

He also mentions that U-S hog prices over that time are likely going to be extremely low.

Plain says this week's U.S. price for barrow and gilt carcasses was down another $2.74, more than 17 dollars from what it was six weeks ago.
