MacAulay: Calgary Meeting Sets Direction For Future Canadian Ag Policies/Services

This month's Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Minister's meeting has wrapped up with what they're calling the Calgary Statement.

The ministers say that statement will guide the development of the next agricultural framework, set to launch in April of 2018.

Additional consultations are planned over the coming months to gather feedback to help inform future agricultural programs and services.

Part of the discussion dealt with the level of participation in AgriStability.

The ministers have tasked officials to consult with the industry on options for improving participation in that program.

They expressed their continued support for developing new markets for Canadian products and for the implementation of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

The ministers agreed on the importance of continuing to work with the industry to build and maintain public trust and sharing the story of the modern, responsible and sustainable practices it uses.

The FPT meeting also endorsed the new Emergency Management Framework for Agriculture in Canada and the Livestock Market Interruption Strategy.

The framework deals with prevention , mitigation and improving the capacity of governments and industry to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

The strategy includes tools and information for all stakeholders in case of an emergency, such as foot-and-mouth disease.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAaulay says the Calgary Statement sets the direction for future agricultural programs and services to help the sector to continue to innovate, grow the economy, create jobs and help grow the middle class.
