The U-S House of Representatives has passed a bill to keep states from issuing mandatory GMO labelling.
The National Corn Growers Association in the U-S says the bill ensures that mandatory, on-pack labels don't place an unwarranted stigma on safe, proven technology.
The bill would instead create a federal standard for voluntary labeling of foods with GMO ingredients.
Three U-S states - Vermont, Connecticut and Maine - have already passed legislation requiring GMO labelling.
NCGA President Chip Bowling says it's important President Obama sign that bill into law quickly.
Bowling argues the legislation provides a solution that works for farmers, food companies and consumers.
The bill's opponents had argued it would keep consumers from knowing what's in their food and would also stop the Federal Drug Administration from coming up with a national GMO-labelling solution.
