Health Canada is proposing some changes to the rules for the importation , sale and use of antimicrobial drugs in livestock.
Health Minister Jane Philpott says it's being done to address the growing public health problem of antimicrobial resistance.
The minister argues the decreasing effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs is having a significant impact on the ability to protect Canadians from infectious diseases.
The proposed changes would restrict the importation of certain veterinary drugs, require drug manufacturers to follow stricter rules and require provision of sales information to regulators for improved monitoring of antimicrobial use.
They would also introduce an easier way for manufacturers to sell low-risk veterinary health products.
Those regulations are posted for public comment on the Canada Gazette.
The public consultation period runs until September 15th.
