Giving Medical Students A Look At Bruce County Agriculture

Some first-year medical students got a chance to get a close-up look at farming in Bruce County this week.

It was part of the annual tour put on by the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture.

Spokesman Pat Jilesen says they want the students to see the difference between what they might experience in an urban setting and what they could expect in rural medicine.

"An opportunity to experience the rural atmosphere. With that comes experiencing farms. Farms and agriculture are the biggest part of rural Ontario and this gives them that opportunity."

The hope is that difference could be intriguing enough to encourage some of those students to return the the area after graduation.

"Maybe to them kind of exciting - and different. I hope they find that difference interesting and intriguing and will continue their career and maybe end up here some day."

This week's tour included a stop at a farm and an equipment dealership as well as a presentation from a local veterinarian.
