Researching Ways To Boost Nutritional Value Of Feed Wheat

A Calgary-based company is working with the University of Manitoba on the use of wheat as a livestock feed.

Canadian Bio-Systems Technical Director Rob Patterson suggests feeding strategies represent one of the greatest opportunities for ivestock operations to improve their efficiency and profitability .

CBS has collected wheat samples from Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the past couple of growing seasons.

The University of Manitoba has then been analysed by th University of Manitoba's Department of Animal Science.

Patterson says the results suggest ways to improve the overall nutritional value of the wheat by five per cent or more.

CBS plans to continue the survey over multiple years to build up more information, which it will be making available to the industry to help in the formulation of livestock diets.

Patterson points out wheat is the most common feed ingredient for pigs and poultry in Western Canada and is also important in Eastern Canada.
