Ontario Corn Planting Nearing 80 Per Cent In Some Areas

OMAFRA reports corn planting progress varies across the province.

The southwestern areas and around Niagara are less than 20 per cent planted while much of the rest of the province is between 60 and 80 per cent completed.

The ministry says cool temperatures, especially at night, have kept soil temperatures low - slowing corn germination.

Only about 5 to 10 per cent of the soybeans have been planted.

OMAFRA reports studies have shown early planted beans usually yield more than later planted fields.

The Ministry is recommending farmers should be planting their soybeans if the ground is fit and the 2 day forecast is decent.

Canola planting progress continues to be slow due to poor weather conditions.

The Ontario winter wheat crop continues to look good with disease levels low.

OMAFRA is not recommending herbicide applications, for the most part, because the wheat is advanced to where the weeds are not impacting yield.

Reports of winter kill on provincial forage stands remains low.
