U-S, Canadian Hog Slaughter Still Running Ahead Of 2015

U-S pork exports were up almost 3 per cent in March from a year ago.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain says U-S pork imports were down 1 point 5 per cent in March from last year.

Plain reports the national negotiated barrow and gilt carcass price last Thursday was up $2.57 from the week before, down $6.52 from a year ago.

U-S hog slaughter of 2 point 214 million head last week was up 3.5 per cent from the week before and almost 5 per cent higher than the same week last year.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports federal slaughter in this country to the end of April was up 3 point 5 per cent from a year earlier.

The Ontario average price of $186.58 was up 17.6 per cent from the same week last year.

And total live hog exports to the U-S so far this year are 8 point 8 per cent higher than they were at this point in 2015.
