Ontario Processors Slaughtering More Hogs Than In 2015

Canadian hog slaughter so far this year is running 3 point 7 per cent ahead of last year's pace.

Here in Ontario, slaughter is up 5 point 6 per cent from the same time last year.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports live hog exports to the U-S so far this year are up 9 point 5 per cent from 2015.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was down 4 point 6 per cent from the week before, 0 point 6 per cent from the same week last year.

Ron Plain's Hog Outlook has the national negotiated barrow and gilt carcass average price last Thursday being up just over 3 dollars from the week before, but over 4.50 lower than a year ago.

The University of Missouri agricultural economist reports U-S cash receipts from hog sales hit 21 billion dollars last year.

That was down 5 point 5 billion from the 2014 record.

Iowa producers posted the biggest hog sales figure at 7 point 5 billion dollars.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
