Ontario Hog Slaughter, Average Price Up From Year Ago

Canadian hog slaughter is up almost 4 per cent so far this year from a year ago.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports Ontario's slaughter is up 3 point 2 per cent.

The biggest increase was in Nova Scotia at over 50 per cent, while Prince Edward Island's almost 28 per cent drop was the biggest decline.

Ontario's price for the week ending March 12th was up 13 point 2 per cent from the same week in 2015.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was down 2 point 4 per cent from the week before and 2 point 3 per cent lower than the same week in 2015.

The national negotiated average barrow and gilt price in the U-S was down almost 2 dollars from the week before.

Ron Plain's Hog Outlook from the University of Missouri says American retail pork prices in February were the lowest since June of last year.

The average of just under $3.74 a pound in February was 5 and a half cents lower than in January and just over 20 cents lower than it was in February 2015.
