Voluntary GMO Labelling Bill Rejected By U-S Congress

The U-S Senate has voted against a proposal for voluntary GMO labelling on food.

The legislation would have stopped states from introducing mandatory GMO labelling - something which is about to go into effect in Vermont.

The U-S National Corn Growers Association says it's disappointed by the defeat of the bill in the Senate.

President Chip Bowling argues the legislation would have provided consumers with a greater amount of information in a consistent, clear manner.

He says the impending implementation of a patchwork of state labelling legislation will soon harm both the American families who grow food and those who buy it.

The Corn Growers Association says there is overwhelming scientific evidence of the safety of GMO technology.

It suggests on-pack labelling that creates confusion and stigmatizes biotechnology serves only a small activist population at the expense of consumers.
