Two-Headed Calf Born On Blyth-Area Farm

An unusual delivery for a Huron County farmer earlier this month.

Les Caldwell reports having a two-headed calf born on his Blyth-area farm on March first.

While the Simmental calf was alive at birth, veterinarians later put it down.

Caldwell says the animal was then sent to the University of Guelph for a post-mortem.

Two-headed calves are rare - the odds against them are as much as 400 million to one, according to some sources.

Most are believed to have started out as twins but all the cells didn't split properly.

Caldwell says that would make sense for the animal on his Huron County farm since the sire involved usually produces a couple of sets of twins a year.
