Canadian, U-S Hog Numbers Up On January 1st

Canadian hog and pig numbers were all up on January 1st from a year ago.

The USDA's figures show the total inventory was up 1 per cent, breeding inventory up 2 per cent and the market hog inventory was up 1 per cent from January 1st of 2015.

The semi-annual pig crop was up 6 per cent and the number of sows farrowing was up 4 per cent from 2014.

In the U-S, the numbers were mixed.

Total inventory, breeding inventory and market hog numbers were all up 1 per cent.

The pig crop, however, was down 1 per cent and the number of sows farrowing was down 4 per cent from 2014.

Combined, the USDA says Canadian and U-S total inventory of hogs and pigs was up 1 per cent with the breeding and market hog inventories also up 1 per cent.

The combined semi-annual pig crop was up 1 per cent while the number of sows farrowing in the two countries was down 2 per cent from 2014.
