Sowing Seeds In Brodhagen

Two European farmers will be in Brodhagen Friday afternoon.

It's part of the National Farmers' Union talk called The Sowing Seeds: A European Perspective. The tour features Claudia Schievelbein of Germany and Guy Kastler of France and they will share their experiences around issues such as farmers' right to save seed, royalties, Plant Breeders Rights legislation, public versus private funding of seed research and the implications of trade agreements such as CETA.

Bill C-18, which implemented UPOV'91 in Canada, was passed last February.

The NFU is concerned about the quality of seed breeding and variety development research, the status of seed ownership under UPOV'91 and what the costs will be to Canadian farmers. The "Sowing Seeds: A European Perspective" tour provides an opportunity for farmers and fellow-citizens to hear from these European farmers about their experience with seed laws and how they affect conditions for farmers in Europe.

The meeting is at the Brodhagen Community Centre at 6708 Perth Ln. 44 northwest of Mitchell between 1pm and 3pm.
