Beef Farmers of Ontario representatives are preparing to elect a new president in just a few weeks.
Current Vice-President Matt Bowman is expected to run unopposed.
Bowman operates a cow-calf farm in Northern Ontario and sits on the board of both the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, and the Beef Cattle Research Council.
Current BFO President Bob Gordanier has spent almost a decade with the organization and he weighed in on the possibility of Bowman moving into his position.
“Great speaker, smart guy, been to school, farms at New Liskeard, farms a fair sized grain operation as well as over a hundred cows so he knows where it's at.”
Gordanier spoke at a convention in London over the weekend where he expressed concern over the chance of a processing facility closing due to a shortage of beef production in the province.
“If we don't do something in this province, we're going to lose a processor. The processors need cattle. This province needs cattle, even though we bring 300,000 calves out of the West. That's fine, that's great, but we need cattle to go to processing in this province and if we lose a processor we're going to find ourselves in trouble.”
The inability to fill plant capacity could jeopardize the employment of hundreds of individuals who staff facilities across the province, in addition to the economic fallout a closure could entail.
