Huron GFO Director - 2015 'Generally A Very Good Year'

The Director for District 8 of the Grain Farmers of Ontario told producers at their recent Huron County annual meeting last year was generally a very good year for grain farmers.

Ken Black acknowledged that some areas got more rain that others but he says personally he enjoyed a record yield for corn, about average for soy beans and a good wheat yield.

He added it's very difficult to say what this winter might mean for weather this spring.

Black pointed to a couple of issues coming this spring that will be of interest to grain farmers.

The first is the appeal of the provincial regulations regarding neonics.

Black believes the report released earlier this month by the Federal government supports their position so he hopes that will help.

The other issue is the province's new carbon tax or cap and trade program.

Black says it's difficult to know which the province is likely to go with at this point.

He suspects it will be the cap and trade.

However, how it affects agriculture or any other sector will depend on the details of the program.

Black suggests the only sure thing is it's going to cost someone some money.

Even with the PMRA report on neonics, Black says he's not taking anything for granted.

Black says at this point they don't know what kind of impact there will be on grain farmers because they don't know whether the province will go with a carbon tax or a cap and trade program.
