Battling The Consumer/Farmer 'Disconnect'

The guest speaker at the recent Huron County Beef Producer's annual meeting says there is a very significant dis-connect between consumers in urban centres and the farms that provide their food.

Sarah Brien represents Farm and Food Ontario, an organisation working hard to close that gap.

She told Huron County producers there is a growing interest among consumers about what goes on on a farm because they want to feel good about what they're eating.

But she adds they want the information in short messages - they don't want to spend a lot of time learning.

Brien explains consumers should know what happens on a farm, what processes the animals go through and why.

It's also important they understand when those processes change there's a good reason for it.

She points out that could be to comply with new animal rights regulations or environmental guidelines or to improve farmers cost of doing business.

Brien adds it's still an uphill battle but farmers should know every one of them is an ambassador for their industry.

She suggests the more information they can get to their consumers the better.

Sarah Brien says the good news is more of them want to know.

Brien believes more consumers want to know how their food is produced.
