Ontario Has Potential To Become Leader In Goat Products In North America

The executive director of Ontario Goat says the provincial industry is growing by leaps and bounds.

Jennifer Haley says the demand for goat milk products like cheese is growing and producers are expanding herds, investing in equipment and new goat farmers are getting into the business.

She argues Ontario has everything needed to become a leader in goat products in North America.

"It's excellent news and it's just a great time to be involved in the goat industry and it's exciting to see all these different innovations that are happening and the research that's happening and the producer optimism," says Haley.

Haley says right now the demand is so great Canada is still importing more goat milk products than it's producing domestically.

She suggests that could change as production increases and eventually there will be export opportunities.

She adds processing facilities are expanding to handle the demand for goat milk products.

As well, the demand for goat meat is growing among the ethnic communities.

Haley was a speaker at Goat Day at Grey Bruce Farmers' Week in Elmwood.
