The University of Guelph's Food Institute has released it's Food Price Report for 2016.
The report suggests the average Canadian household could spend up to 345 dollars more on food next year.
That would be the top end of it's 2 to 4 per cent food inflation rate forecast for 2016.
The biggest increases are expected in meats and fruits and nuts - both at from 2 point 5 to 4 point 5 per cent.
The report suggests the average Canadian household will spend about 86 hundred dollars on food with about 24 hundred of that at restaurants.
The University of Guelph's Food Institute sees three major consumer trends for the coming year - supply chain transparency and animal welfare, gut health and vegetable proteins.
It also expects El Nino's impact on the climate and the low Canadian dollar will have an impact on food prices in 2016.
