New Ontario Group Targeting Swine Health Issues

The Swine Health Advisory Board hosted a seminar in Stratford Wednesday.

The theme of the event was 'big bugs', an issue that has hit home in recent years as local farms fell victim to PED.

Swine Health Ontario is a new entity in the pork industry that is targeting issues related to porcine health.

Amy Cronin is the board member representing Ontario Pork.

She unveiled the new entity and some of it's core concerns.

"It's a real collaborative effort, bringing together all of the resources that we currently have; the Ontario Pork Producers Marketing Board, Ontario Pork Industry Council, in collaboration with OMAFRA and other entities as well. Working together to create a plan that will elevate swine health in Ontario, to make it more of a priority for the entire industry because we feel that essentially that's what will give us a competitive advantage globally. The main mandate I would say of Swine Health Ontario is to have a collaborative approach to swine health. So it's making sure that we've got surveillance, early detection, a response plan, a good coordinated communication plan when it comes to disease Ontario and elevating the health of the herds in Ontario so that we have a competitive global advantage."

Swine Health Ontario will be unveiling a complete mandate in the near future.
