FCC VP Suggests Canada 'Up To The Challenge' Of Rising Global Food Demand

As the global economy changes, so too does the Agricultural Sector.

There's a global explosion of food demand and along with that comes increased agricultural opportunities thanks to growing economies like those in China and India.

Speaking to the recent Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario's Annual Convention in Waterloo, Lyndon Carlson, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Farm Credit Canada told the convention about the agricultural opportunity(s) this presents for us here in the west.

"So, the growing middle class in China and India represent a complete revolution in terms of food demand because when income starts to climb a bit, what do people in those categories spend their money on? Improving their diet," says Carlson.

Carlson added that Canada is one of only a handful of countries that's up to the challenge of feeding this new global explosion of food demand and doing so safely.

"And we can do it, and we can do it sustainably , and we can do it responsibly," says Carlson, adding, "so all that to say, agriculture is in good hands with these farmers that are in this room today, we're doing things right and doing it better than ever before."

Carlson says Canadian farmers are more responsible in areas like water, crop protection products, land treatment and animal welfare.

He says society can trust Canadian Agriculture to feed them, and feed them safely.
