Ontario's 2015 Corn Production Up Over 16 Per Cent

Production of most Canadian field crops increased in 2015.

However, Statistics Canada says wheat was one of the exceptions - with production dropping just over 6 per cent in 2015.

Harvested area was up but average total wheat yield was lower than in 2014.

National corn for grain production was up 18 per cent.

Ontario's production was up 16 point 3 per cent to 8 point 8 million tonnes.

Statscan reports an almost 10 per cent increase in harvested area and an increase in average yield of almost 10 bushels to 170 point 6 bushels a acre.

Canadian farmers reported a seventh consecutive record soybean production in 2015 - up 3 point 1 per cent to 6 point 2 million tonnes.

However, Ontario soybean production fell just over 5 per cent to 3 point 6 million tonnes.

Average soybean yield in Ontario this year was steady - harvested acreage was down about 3 and a half per cent.

And Statistics Canada reports Canadian canola production was up 5 per cent, thanks in part to an almost 3 bushels per acre increase in the average yield to 38 bushels an acre this year.
