The provincial government has designated Guelph Soil as the official soil of Ontario.
Guelph Soil is made up of loams, sandy loams and silt loams.
More than 70 thousand hectares can be found in various parts of the province, including Perth, Wellington and Lambton Counties and Waterloo Region.
It was one of the first group of soils described by the Ontario Soil Survey, launched in 1914.
The designation is part of Ontario's commemoration of the U-N's declaration that 2015 is the International Year of Soils.
Ontario Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says the designation commemorates one of the things that makes the province's agri-food sector so highly-productive.
Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association President Alan Kruszel calls it a great way to raise awareness of the importance of soil to all Ontarians.
