The National Farmers Union held its annual convention in London this past weekend, featuring speakers from across North America.
The theme of this year's convention was soil. Speakers held workshops on a broad range of topics from soil chemistry to environmental regulation. Over a hundred attendees had the opportunity to question the panel of experts and share their own challenges.
Larry Marshall was one of the speakers at the event, his presentation highlighted the work being done with micro organisms.
"In Costa Rica there was a lot of people from Japan that came over and were helping out in Costa Rica and they brought a lot of ideas on the use of micro-organisms and they started a college there called Earth Technologies and so they've been able to teach a lot of the farmers how to utilize micro-organisms and it's something that we lack here."
Marshall went on to say that a number of major chemical production companies in North America are actively researching the agricultural applications for micro-organisms all over the world.
"Agriculture is pretty much run by corporate and its just so easy to fall into the ease of it because when you're working with stuff like micro-organisms and that, you've got to go out of your way to do extra work to make them and there's nobody there helping you out to know how to work with them so it's a steep learning curve for sure and its so easy to get into the path of putting your fertilizer on and spraying the weeds and going fishing and come back and harvest a clean crop you know?"
