The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is being encouraged to develop a Memorandum Of Understanding with it's member commodity organisations.
Delegates to the OFA's annual general meeting endorsed a resolution calling for those MOU's this week.
The resolution was put forward by the Ottawa federation, arguing disagreements between the OFA and the commodity groups can weaken lobby efforts and divide farmers.
According to the Ottawa group, that gives the government the chance to impose its way regarding the issues affecting the province's farmers.
It suggested a Memorandum Of Understanding would clarify areas of responsibility and set guidelines for dealing with issues that are considered commodity specific and which should be dealt with by their respective commodity boards.
While some delegates suggested an MOU could have avoided a perceived rift between OFA and Grain Farmers of Ontario, others pointed out the memorandums still won't mean the different organisations will agree on every issue.
The OFA has one MOU right now - with Beef Farmers of Ontario.
