NFU Looking For More Helpful Federal Agricultural Policies

National Farmers Union President Jan Slomp hopes the country's agricultural policy will now move in a direction that's more helpful to farm families than what has been seen over the past decade.

Slomp's comments came as part of the NFU's welcoming of Lawrence MacAuley as the new federal Liberal Agriculture Minister.

The NFU suggests a number of priority issues it would like to see MacAuley tackle.

They include a renewal of public funding for agriculture-related research and a full public examination of the Trans Pacific Partnership.

The NFU is also calling for a rebuilding of Canada's agriculture infrastructure.

The farm organisation argues that goes beyond roads and bridges to include rebuilding the country's marketing, transportation and regulatory institutions to better serve farmers.
