NFU: CETA And TPP Great Leap Backwards For Canada

The National Farmers Union took advantage of the recent World Food Day to take a shot at the recent free trade deal with Europe and the Trans Pacific Partnership.

According to the NFU, World Food Day is a reminder of our international commitment to work toward world -wide food security and social justice for food producers.

However, President Jan Slomp argues Canada has taken a great leap backward with CETA and the TPP.

The NFU complains those deals undermine Canada's supply management system for dairy, eggs and poultry.

The national farm group says those deals also facilitate concentration in the grains and livestock industries - leading to fewer and less-secure farmers.

It's the NFU's argument that free trade deals like CETA and the TPP are fundamentally about shifting economic decision-making power from national governments to multinational corporations.

It blames the Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanism in those deals for that because it makes it possible for corporations to sue national governments if they pass laws or regulations reducing a company's future profitability.
