CFA: Time For An Ag Export Strategy

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture suggests now is a good time for the Canadian government to pause and assess it's trade agenda.

The CFA points out the country has recently negotiated free trade agreements with the two largest trading blocks in the world with the TPP and the European deal.

President Ron Bonnett says what's needed now is for the government and industry stakeholders to come together and analyse what is needed for Canadian farmers to take full advantage of these trade deals.

Bonnett argues that includes developing an export strategy.

Meanwhile, the CFA president says his organisation is carefully reviewing the details of the TPP to better understand the varied outcomes for Canadian farmers.

Bonnett thinks now that we have the free trade deal with Europe and the TPP, it's time to look at ways to develop those markets.

Bonnett says with the free trade deal with Europe and the TPP, we should be identifying any additional barriers which could keep us from capturing as much of those markets as possible.

Ron Bonnett says an example of differing regulations is the fact U-S dairy producers can use supplements with their animals not allowed in Canada.
