Ag Reaction To TPP Talks Divided

The renewal of the Trans Pacific Partnership talks in Atlanta this week has brought with it a barrage of public statements and actions by Canadian farm groups.

While all appear to be in favour of the TPP - some suggest there needs to be a limit to how much Canada gives up to be part of that partnership.

Dairy Farmers of Canada says while it does not oppose international trade, it's members oppose endangering the stability and viability of their industry.

Dairy Farmers of Ontario argues that the fact other countries dairy farmers are suffering from volatile world markets and a global oversupply of milk does not mean Canada must sacrifice its own strong, stable rural economy to solve their problems.

On the other side of the discussion - the Canadian Pork Council - which suggests not being part of the TPP would risk this country's pork sector becoming uncompetitive in several of it's most valuable markets.

Soy Canada, which represents the country's soybean value chain, says it supports a TPP agreement that eliminates tariffs on soybean products and provides stable and open trade between member countries.

Most of Canada's agricultural sectors will be represented, in one form or another, in Atlanta this week as the TPP discussions continue.
