Ontario Fed Steer Price Up, Heifer Price Down Last Week

More replacement cattle and cull cows on offer in Ontario last week but virtually no change in the fed cattle numbers.

Replacement marketings were up almost 900 from the previous week and just over 200 more than a year ago.

Cull cattle sales were up almost 300 on the week and just over 500 on the year.

Fed cattle marketings were up 7 head from a week ago but down 160 from 2014.

Beef Farmers of Ontario reports the average fed steer price last week was up 53 cents on the week, over 22 dollars higher than a year ago.

The average fed heifer price was down just over 2 dollars on the week and over 25 dollars higher than the same week in 2014.

The average Ontario cull cow price was down 17 cents on the week but over 12 dollars stronger than year ago prices.

And BFO says auction markets reported very good replacement cattle demand with prices to barely steady earlier in the week becoming steady with firm prices as the week's marketings wrapped up.

Comments for the week ending August 27, 2015 The receipts of fed steers and heifers on offer at auction markets this week was very close to last week at 496 head, up 7 from last week but down 160 from last year at this time. Fed steers ranged from $178.85-$191.92 with a weekly weighted average price of $187.42 up $0.53 from last week and $22.46 stronger than last year at this time. Fed heifers traded from $172.87-$190.21 averaging $183.70 down $2.38 from last week and $25.36 higher than year ago prices. Auction markets reported the fed cattle trade as good with prices steady to $1.00-$2.00 easier than last week's prices.

Ontario rail grade prices averaged $3.50 lower this week with steers starting out from $314.00-$318.00 dressed and by Wednesday declining to $312.00-$317.00 dressed. Heifers followed the same trend starting out from $313.00-$317.00 dressed down to $311.00-$316.00 on Wednesday. This week's average prices are up $36.50 from last year at this time.

2,536 cull cows sold through auction markets this week up 296 head from last week and 508 more than last year at this time. Cull cow sales ranged from $95.69-$135.15 averaging $114.14 down $0.17 from last week and $12.33 stronger than year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as good demand with prices steady to $1.00 - $2.00 higher early in the week but by the end of the week markets were reporting steady to slightly lower prices.

There were 3,696 replacement cattle on offer this week at Ontario auction markets up 897 head from last week and 202 more than last year at this time. Auction markets reported very good demand with prices steady to barely steady early on in the week. Later in the week trade was reported as steady with firm prices. Actual average prices this week for steers 400-500 lbs averaged $3.89 higher than last week, 500-600 lbs were down $6.28, 600-700 lbs down $10.52, 700-800 lbs down $9.82, 800-900 lbs were up $13.73, and steers over 900 lbs averaged $0.77 higher than last week. Heifers 300-400 lbs averaged quite a bit higher than last week by $43.08, 400-500 lbs were up $13.27, 500-600 lbs down $12.51, 600-700 lbs down $11.56, 700-800 lbs up $9.09, and heifers over 800 lbs averaged $7.24 higher than last week, on average.

The Quebec Electronic Market for the week ending August 27th averaged $3.42 lower than the previous week with sales reported from $309.00-$312.50 dressed.

Alberta direct trade for the week ending August 27th reported live sales $2.10 lower than last week and dressed sales $3.75 lower than the previous week. Canfax reported steer sales for the week ending August 27th at $179.90 live and $301.50-$306.50 dressed, and heifer sales at $180.75 live and $302.00-$306.50 dressed.

The US cash cattle trade for the week ending August 27th has been very light. Prices have been reported as $228.00 dressed, down from last week's prices.
