Canadian And U-S Hog Inventories Up Over 2014

Statistics Canada says there were more hogs on Canadian farms July 1st than a year ago, but fewer cattle and sheep.

The numbers agency reports 13 point 2 million hogs, 13 million head of cattle and 1 point 1 million sheep on Canadian farms the first of July.

That's a 1 point 1 per cent increase for hogs and a 2 point 1 per cent drop for both cattle and sheep from the same time last year.

Overall cattle inventories include both dairy and beef.

The number of beef cows was down 3 point 4 per cent while the number of beef heifers held for breeding edged down 0 point 6 per cent.

Canadian cattle slaughter was down 13 and a half per cent from a year ago with a 2 point 9 per cent increase in hog slaughtering over that same period.

While the Canadian cattle herd shrank a bit, the U-S catle inventory on July 1st was 2 per cent higher than a year ago at 98 point 4 million head.

The USDA says the American hog and pig inventory on June 1st was 66 point 9 million head - up 9 per cent from a year ago.
