Canadian Hog Prices 24-29 Per Cent Lower This Year

Canadian hog slaughter for the first seven months of this year came to just over 46 million head.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada says that's 16 point 4 per cent higher than it was a year ago.

Hog prices across the country for the week ending August 1st were running from 24 to almost 29 per cent below a year ago.

Ontario again posted the biggest drop at 28 point 6 per cent.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain says the strong American dollar continues to be a problem for the U-S hog sector.

He reports pork exports were down almost 5 per cent in the first half of this year compared to a year ago, while imports were up almost 20 per cent.

Most of that imported pork - over 76 million pounds - came from Canada.

Plain reports the U-S negotiated carcass price for plant delivered hogs last week was down 34 cents.

U-S hog slaughter was down 0 point 3 per cent from the previous week - over 10 per cent higher than it was the same week in 2014.

That's the tenth consecutive week with a double-digit increase in U-S hog slaughter compared to a year ago.
