Canadian, Ontario Hog Slaughter Numbers Up This Year

Canadian pork exports are down from a year ago, but our shipments of live hogs to the U-S are up.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports our exports of pork products are down about 5 per cent this year from a year ago, by volume.

At the same time, our shipments of live hogs to the U-S are up 12 point 3 per cent from 2014.

Federal and provincial hog slaughter to July 25th is up almost 3 per cent from a year ago.

Ontario's slaughter numbers are up 2 point 5 per cent.

Last week's Ontario hog price was 30 per cent below where it was a year ago.

In the U-S, the University of Missouri's Ron Plain reports last week's hog slaughter was up 14 point 3 per cent from the same week last year.

U-S year to date hog slaughter is 7 point 5 per cent above 2014.

Plain says the national average negotiated carcass price for direct delivered hogs was virtually unchanged from the previous week, but over 43 dollars lower than a year ago.
