Funding has been announced for genomic projects to benefit Canada's dairy and pork sectors.
The Ontario Genomics Institute and Genome Alberta are leading a project to use genomics to select dairy cattle with the genetic traits needed for more efficient feed conversion and lower methane emissions.
The Canadian Dairy Network and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation are among the partners putting up the 10 point 3 million dollars for that project.
The second project involves researchers at PigGen Canada, the University of Alberta and the University of Saskatchewan.
They're developing genomics tools to help pork producers manage disease, reduce costs and increase product quality.
A number of industry partners are involved in this project.
Because of that, researchers expect that within 5 years of it's completion the rate of generic improvements and productivity will have a more than 137 million dollar impact on pig production.
The pork project is getting 9 point 8 million dollars in funding from partners including Swine Innovation Pork and the Ontario Genomics Institute.
